Cockpit

Other wise known as:

"Those kayaks have a really narrow cockpit which makes it hard to stay dry with a regular spray skirt."

The cockpit is the hole in the kayak where your lower body goes inside. Cockpits are typically shaped like a pear or a tear. The cockpit has a rim of plastic that sticks up above the boat also known as the combing of the boat.

The outside measurement of your kayak’s cockpit determines what sized spray skirt you will need. Typically a kayak will have either a small, medium or large keyhole shaped and sized cockpit.

This rim is what the spray skirt snaps around and is a weak point. One of the first places for a kayak to wear out is around the rim of the cockpit. This is always a bummer because no matter how good of a spray skirt you may have the crack will leak water.
