Grab Loop

Other wise known as: Underwater exit sign, Life line

"Garret nearly drown because his grab loop was stuck inside his cockpit"

A grab loop is the loop of material at the front of a spray skirt. It is used to quickly and easily release the spray skirt from its water tight seal around the cockpit of a kayak. A grab loop is typically made of bright nylon webbing so that it can be easily seen underwater when you need to make your wet exit.

It is very important to make sure your grab loop is always on the outside of the cockpit. Since the grab loop is attached to the inside of the spray skirt it very easily falls into the cockpit while you are putting your spray skirt on. This has negative consequences as it makes it very hard, if not impossible, to release your spray skirt when you are upside down and can’t roll back upright.

Sometimes, you will see grab loops with carabineers attached. This is for when you are out of your boat. You can clip your spray skirt to your life jacket so that it is not swinging around and soaking your shorts while you are hiking to scout your next rapid.
