Rand

Other wise known as: Spray skirt edge or rim

"That rand is about worn out, you need a new spray skirt if you want to stay dry"

The rand is the piece of tight fitting material that circles the bottom of a spray skirt. It is used to make a watertight connection with a kayak’s cockpit rim. The length of the rand determines what size keyhole the spray skirt will fit on.

In the early days of spray skirts the rand was made of a bungee cord with a knot tied in the back. This knot could be untied and retied to fit the cockpits of different kayaks. These days the rand is sometimes encased in the spray skirt material and is no longer adjustable, however newer spray skirts fit tighter for longer periods compared to older ones.
