General Overview - This is to keep all of your boats in the best shape they can. Storing your kayak properly will keep them from oil canning or loosing their strength and durability from UV rays and cold temps or hot temps through the long off season. Preparation – Have an area you want to put your kayak. Garage, hanging from the ceiling, living room, shed, somewhere preferably inside a building. How To - Step 1 – There are a couple of different ways of storing your kayaks, you can hang them, stand them on end, or leave them upside down. Step 2- If you want to keep your kayak on end then you will want to have the stern on the floor and have it leaning up on the wall. If you want to hang them, then they can be hung in a cradle on one of its sides. A strap on the stern and one on the bow is all you need but go threw your grab loops just incase. You don’t want to just hang the boat from the grab loops, as that can weaken the loops and/or break them and that’s not good! Your grab loops could save someone on the river if needed. If stored on the ground you will want to store your kayaks upside down. Storing the boat upside down prevents it from oil canning because there is no weight pushing down and on the hull of your boat and warping it. Why is this Important - Your kayak, is your kayak, treat it with respect and it will have many days on the river. If you store your kayak right you wont have to worry about your boat being weaker because of improper storage and it will take you on many different amazing adventures. Storing Multiple Kayaks - Probably the easiest way to store multiple kayaks would be to stand them on end and line them up. I can fit three boats together in and area no bigger than 3 x 3 foot area. The picture is a good representation on how to store multiple kayaks.
Common Mistakes - People like to keep there kayak on there car. This isn’t a good idea because it could easily get stolen and also it can deteriorate from UV rays and oil can. You never want to leave your kayak outside in the winter time. This is not good for the boat at all. Also leaving it on its edge can oil can the bottom. If your boat starts to oil can, you can leave it in the sun and let it warm up. Typically the oil can goes away but sometimes you have to use a little force and push it out.
