The definition - One of the most crucial skills to running a river is the boof. This is the technique of controlling boat angle to avoid complications with holes, shallow water, or other obstacles not otherwise avoidable. How To - The boof utilizes a combination of a strong vertical forward stroke, timing, and body position. Only when the combination of these three techniques is used properly will the boof be correctly preformed. The Stroke: Technique above power. Any person can perform this stroke regardless of build and muscle mass. As the boat travels toward the lip of the drop plant the boof stroke just past the lip starting near your feet. Concentrate on a vertical forward stroke. As the boat travels past the lip of the drop the stroke will follow in perfect unison; not faster nor slower than the rate of speed of the boat. This forward stroke differs from other forward strokes as it is stationary (your body and boat are moving this time). Once the boof stroke is planted it will not travel forward nor backward from its original position. Do not try to overly force this stroke it will result in an adverse affect. End the stroke at or just past your hips; from this point your hips will be just past the lip as well. Body position and timing now takes over. Body Position and Timing: As your stroke and the lip of the drop are just in front of your hips. Begin bringing your legs to your chest in unison with the rest of your boof stroke. Concentrate on bringing your legs to your chest and not vice versa. At this point you will be air born and the boat will be falling horizontally. Maintain a forward body position until impact to avoid spinal injury. This is the most dangerous part the boof, if a boat lands flat in non-aerated water, from a substantial height, or into shallow water you risk serous injury to your spine. Practice this over and over on small pourovers before you need it for some crazy creek move. Have you got another way to do this trick or any suggestions for other paddlers.
