The definition -The spray skirt is the essential piece of equipment that keeps your lower body dry while kayaking. Without putting on your spray skirt your not even really kayaking. Prep - Spray skirts are made to be smaller then your kayak's cockpit in order to be water tight but if your new to putting a spray skirt onto your kayak then you will swear you bought a size too small. Although they are annoying, a tight fitting spray skirt is essential to going kayaking. With out knowing a few simple tricks a spray skirt is damn near impossible to get on. How To - Start out by putting the back of your spray skirt on. You do this by leaning back in the cockpit and putting the rand of the spray skirt into the outside rim of your cockpit. Make sure the rand fits nicely all the way along the back and up the sides to about your mid section. Don’t worry about the long uncovered cockpit quite yet. When you have the back part secured you are ready for the hard part. Take both of your thumbs, on either side of your grab loop, at the front of the spray skirt, and loop them underneath the rand. This should flip the front of the spray skirt up and toss the grab loop back towards you. Now slowly lean forward and push your thumbs to the front of the cockpit. When you get most of the way there use your remaining fingers to grab the cockpit rim and help continue pulling the spray skirt forward. Although it will be really tight keep going until you get your thumbs, and the rand, past the very front of the cockpit. At this point angle your thumbs down so that the rand slips off and right onto the outside rim of your cockpit. At this point you want to make sure your grab loop is out. If it is not then you have to do it again. You should never ever kayak with your grab loop stuck inside your kayak. If you are sure your grab loop is out then take both hands and run them along the entire rim of the cockpit and make sure the spray skirt is tightly in position. If it is off just a little bit on one of the sides then the whole skirt will probably snap off as soon as you twist your body or start paddling. Even if you do everything correctly your spray skirt may snap off the back or one of the sides. Keep trying and make sure you are centered as you pull the front of your skirt on. If you are pulling harder with one side then the other your skirt will most likely pop off. A wet spray skirt is usually a little more loose and easier to put on as well. Brand new spray skirts are the hardest to get on but also typically keep you the driest. Related Terms: Have you got another way to do this trick or any suggestions for other paddlers.
