The definition - A vertical 180 degree direction change on a wave, going from a front surf to a back surf. Prep - The air blunt is one of the first wave maneuvers you will want to learn. The concept of the air blunt analogous to the: Pan-Am, Backstab and Clean Blunt. A key to the success of the air blunt is sharp and concise transfers of edges. How To - The Move - Start at the top of the wave- you want peak acceleration and proper placement on the wave at the time you begin the move. Tip: Begin by front surfing the wave for some time to get a feel of your boat accelerating down the wave, reaching the bottom then decelerating and climbing back to the top. You want to throw the move in the middle of point A (the top of the wave) and point B (the bottom of the wave). Once you have found your ‘sweet spot’ on the wave you are ready to throw the air blunt. This trick description is for a left air blunt, the right air blunt is achieved through this same process of maneuvers just on the opposite side. As you are at the top of the accelerating downward initiate the right edge of the boat into the wave- you can do this by hopping down the wave and landing on the right edge of the kayak or by leaning forward and pressing down with your feet. The timing and changing of edges is instrumental in the amplitude and dynamism of the air blunt. The right edge of your boat will begin to bounce back from the surface of the water if you have initiated it correctly. Plant the back of your left paddle blade just behind your hips, flat against the surface of the water while simultaneously transferring from your right edge to left edge while putting pressure against the back of your paddle blade. Use your blade to throw your feet under you. This motion will separate your boat from the water and complete the 180 degree direction change thus achieving a proper air blunt. However, a trick is only as good as the landing. Once you have landed backward on the wave immediately place a strong back stroke to ‘stick’ the trick and keep surfing.
