The definition - A vertical 180 change in direction from a back surf to a front surf. The opposite of a Blunt.

Prep - Being comfortable surfing backward in the kayak is helpful before seriously perusing the back stab. A good grasp on the Air Blunt is helpful as well as the initiation of the Backstab and Air Blunt is the same; only back ward.

How To -

The Move -Start at the top of the wave in a back surf.

Hop the kayak down the wave landing on the rear left rail of the kayak. This gets tricky as your kayak doesn’t have the same rocker in the stern as the bow; it takes a bit of practice and fine-tuning to get the back stab initiated properly.

I recommend the proven ‘trial and error’ technique.

Once the initiation is functioning similar to the Air Blunt with the kayak’s rear left rail becoming dropping into the wave then rebounding back; quickly transfer edges. Drop the power face of your right blade into water and look over your left shoulder. The boat will pass into the vertical realm with your paddle blade creating the force necessary to compete the 180 direction change.

The back stab, if executed properly, will land you and your kayak back into a front surf on the wave. This is an easier trick to stick as you are landing onto a front stroke in a front surf.
