The definition - A 360 degree, upside down, aerial rotation. Prep - The Helix is one of the most complex aerial moves in the book of freestyle kayaking. A keen sense of boat control and orientation comes in handy with the Helix. The trick is explained doing a Right Helix but is easily switched for a Left Helix How To - The Move - Begin at the top of the wave accelerating downward. Hop down the wave spinning the boat slightly to your right. Be sure to land as flat on your hull as possible to initiate the bounce necessary to keep the boat airborne throughout the trick. As you land the hop immediately initiate the move. Place the back side of your blade flat against the surface of the water on your downstream/right side, directly next to your hips. Use your blade to leverage your bounce and rotation. Next, using your body; throw the boat upside-down flipping it toward the same side you planted your paddle on. At this moment the boat should be upside-down with bow of the boat pointing down stream, toward the crest of the wave. Now you need to transfer your edge and paddle blade to the left. As your boat continues its rotation and is now 270 degrees from the launch point, use the left paddle blade to bring the boat upright and in the same paddle motion and turn it into an aggressive forward stroke. This last stroke will finish the rotation of the kayak and keep up the forward momentum as to avoid flushing off the wave. Good luck and keep trying it until you nail it because it will feel damn good when you do. Have you got another way to do this trick or any suggestions for other paddlers?
