The definition - This is a river running move where you can do a horizontal pirouette or barrel roll in the air and land upright. The kickflip can be done going over a wave crest or launching off of the shoulder of a wave. Also might be known as a Barrel Roll.

Prep - You need a steep wave, lots of downstream speed, body and mind commitment, flat water cartwheel, back deck roll, and good edge control.

How To -

Step 1 – You want to create a lot of downstream speed. Do this by paddling hard forward towards the crest of the wave with one last big launching stroke from the bow all the way into the start of the roll. The last stroke is done to throw your bow in the air and send your boat past the crest faster. You want to be looking at the peak and preparing to hit the timing down.

Step 2 - As you take this launching stroke you want to thrust your hips off the wave and drop an edge, then throw your body back onto the back deck, essentially doing a back deck roll. You want to be looking back at the wave and be looking at your destination by leading with the head. The stroke that you take as you launch off helps you spin around faster. It is just a full stroke all the way off the wave. It will help you start the back deck roll by starting your rotation for the trick.

Step 3 - The edge that you drop depends on the side that your last stroke is on. If it is on your left side you drop your left edge and throw your back deck roll to the left. If it is on the right side you drop your right edge and throw your back deck roll to the right.

Finishing - As your looking at the water (which is one of the coolest feelings) you want to finish your back deck roll and land upright by bringing your body forward and planting your paddle behind and underneath your body so you brace for what’s to come to. If you’re not going to make it all the way around don’t panic and keep your arms and elbows close so is not to get hurt. Keep doing your back deck roll as you land in the water and you want to complete your back deck roll in the water and come forward with your blade out to catch the water.

Common Mistakes - Common mistakes can be not finishing the back deck roll and landing on your face, which kind of hurts. A way to fix this is have more speed off the face or rotating faster. Another mistake can be not dropping the edge at the beginning that will just make you spin off the wave.

General Tips - Keep your shoulders close to keep them safe. Be comfortable on your edges, balance is key to good edge control. And have fun with it, you have to really commit to this trick and just go for it.

Adding Style – A way you can style it up is by making it a clean kickflip by not using your paddle but its a lot harder and you have to have a huge wave or hit a huge wave shoulder to launch yourself in the air. Another way that you can add a little style is do a one paddle or no paddle kick, but to do that you have to have a bombproof hand roll.

Similar Tricks - the Air Screw and Donkey Flip are also done with the same move and a Wave Wheel because you set up the same way but do a cartwheel instead.

Tricks to Try Next - Blunt, Pan-Am, Wave Wheel, Macho Move, or if you’re really up for a challenge try a Hail Marry.

There are two very common ways to do a Kickflip. The first is a back deck roll, while the other is a continuous brace over your paddle. I do the second so that is what I will explain.

Obtain speed and your angle of approach. As you reach the top of the wave, take a stroke to pull yourself off the backside of the wave.

Once you have reached your max height, take the same blade you just stroked with and begin to push down on it lightly.

Now kick your feet away from you and throw your head under the boat.

Rotate the rest of the way through using your paddle blade, and you just stuck a Kickflip.
