What started out as
little more than a convoluted plan by a couple of Missoula,
Montana shreds, quickly became a contest that easily
rivaled any of the local ski hills own events. It was
informal, unsanctioned, unauthorized and went off without
a hitch. And anyone of the 120 or so who came out that
Saturday will tell you that it was bigger than anyone
wouldve ever imagined. The idea was simple: an
informal contest of sorts at the local backcountry stomping
grounds.
The planning was minimal, but
proved successful. The atmosphere was relaxed and proved
ideal. It was a contest the likes of which few, if any,
have ever been a part of, but all are glad to have now
known. It all went down at Lolo Pass on Saturday March
9th, under sunny skies and atop 8 inches of new snow.
It was yet another instance of The Brotherhood ruining
the backcountry experience for all those granola toting
snow shoers and free heelers.
The sun was shinin', the Pabst was flowin' and the
shreds were huckin'. When it all began there were
few more than those competing milling around,
but within an
hour or so the crowds started to roll in, and roll in
they did. Around 2 pm the competition started really
picking up. The riders were fueled by the crowd and
the crowd was fueled by the Pabst. There were burgers
on the grill, tunes on the stereo and one loud mouthed
jack ass on the megaphone, who managed to keep the crowd
laughing all day long. As the afternoon wore on riders
continued to throw down. The contest was informally
judged by those watching. After each rider gave it their
best the crowd would come to a consensus on a point
total. The huck factor played in huge, but steez were
definitely accounted for as
well. All in all around 30
riders hit the jump and surprisingly enough the landing
held up pretty well. As the afternoon wore on riders
continued upping the ante, and it was long before the
'death gap' was discovered.
