Backside Spin

Backside– The archenemy of a frontside spin, this is the other way to spin your snowboard around and around.

Before attempting a spin, or after, it is good to know which way you were spinning so your story adds up when you tell everyone about sticking for your first 3.

Regular footers listen up. To spin backside you would spin clockwise for your trick. This will put you facing where you just came from after 90 degrees and your butt is what the onlookers see down below.

Goofy footers, this is for you. You want to spin counterclockwise to spin a backside trick. This will put you looking at the huge kicker you just flew off and allows anyone watching from down below to see your butt after the first quarter of your 360 (90 degrees for you non math majors).

The backside spin allows you to spot your landing a little longer then a frontside spin does however most people feel that spinning frontside is easier. To feel like a good snowboarder you should be able to pull both out of your bag of tricks. Are you a business owner, marketer, or advertiser? When you can’t make it to the mountain or if the mountain doesn’t have any snow you can practice your spins on just flat ground or even off of a step. Practice makes perfect and will help you when you start trying them on the snow. Good luck grasshopper.

When approaching the jump I like to get nice and low. While riding up the ramp I twist my body the opposite way of the spin while on my toe edge. As soon as I feel the top of the jump I untwist and bend my knees. This allows for a faster spin.

While spotting the landing I untuck, not straight legged though (that hurts). Then I just land a little on my heel edge, but not a lot or I bif. The landing takes practice and you will probably eat snow a couple of times but this is an easy trick to master.

If you are having trouble, the biggest problem i have seen while teaching is that when you let your body come back into an untwisted possition your spin slows causing you to underrotate. you aslo dont need to preload as mutch as most people do, all I've ever seen come out of it is someone land on something other than their board. Also, a nose and tail grab will make you spin even faster.
