Learning The Trick

General Overview

Launching off of a cliff and successfully landing it.

Preparation

Make sure what ever cliff you are planning to drop is relatively free of 'surprises' in the landing zone.

Doing It

Finding a cliff you are comfortable with is the first step in learning to huck.

There are two ways to hit a cliff: A straight drop or with speed.

Just dropping gives a larger impact and less room to ski out of the landing, so try to go in with speed.

Visualize the hit from start to finish a few times before you huck. If you think you are going to crash, you will.

Pop as you reach the lip as if you were hitting a kicker. Lift your legs up and tuck them in. Keep your arms up and in front of you to keep your balance and not flail.

Finishing

As you fall, spot your landing then extend your legs into the landing zone. This helps you absorb the impact and avoid hip checking rock and stumps. Ride out hard and make a slow turn at the end to stop. Well done, now go find a bigger one.

Mastering The Trick

General Tips

  • Don't always tuck your legs because if you hit it too fast the compression will make it to hard to re-extend them!
  • When you land, if you have a center mounted ski, it is sometimes good to land and crouch toward the back of your ski to absorb the impact.

Adding Style

A good grab (like a Mute Grab) will help minimize the 'Rolling Down the Windows' effect this often seen with new huckers.

Throwing an Iron Cross also makes a cliff drop look good.

If you're as cool as Julian Carr then throw in a Backflip while hucking huge.
