In a sentence

  • "We're planning on doing some fun river running, not hair boating."

Definition

The most dangerous and technically challenging runs. However, these runs have potential for the most adrenaline rush, and have higher consequences for mistakes. Examples of thes are the North Fork of the Crystal, or Yule creek; experts only.

History

This term began when a particularly difficult rapid was described as a "hairy" rapid. A difficult river was termed "hairy" too, and when someone asked what type of water was on this type of river, the answer was frequently "nothing but hair." So boaters of hair became hair boaters.
