The definition - To use a radical weight shift to get the boat out of the air during a surf.

The Ollie is a super fun move and is essential to almost all air moves you will do on a wave.

Prep - All the Ollie is is a transfer of weight and timing with the wave, this makes the Ollie one of the easiest moves to do one a wave and it is absolutely essential to all air moves on a wave such as Blunts, Flip turns, Ollie oops, Donkey Flips and every other air move you can dream up.

How To -

The move - The easiest place to do this move is on a fast surging wave. Until you start working on the move just sit in a front surf to get a good feel for it. Watch the surges and boils in the water come down the wave in front of the wave towards you. There is almost always a pattern to these and if you pay close enough attention you will get this pattern down and know when the best time to throw the move is.

(1) You need to wait until you are at the top of the wave speeding down the face (weight forward). Wait until your boat is bouncing slightly, then wait for the next surge.

(2) As the surge passes under you make a very radical weight change back to front.

(3) Throw all of your weight back, this will put air under the bow of the boat.

(4) As soon as you the bow stops its climb throw all of you weight forward to hop you boat into the air.

(5) The landings on the are fairly easy but you need to be ready, if a surge is coming your bow will dive under blowing you off of the wave. So when you land be ready to put your boat on edge shedding the water off of the bow. Also a forward stroke on the landing is helpful but is not essential to the move.

Usually the bigger the surges the more air your ollies will get. If the wave doesn’t surge a lot try lots of these in a row. Hopefully each one will be bigger then the first, but only if the wave doesn’t surge.
