Ski Trees

Learning The Trick
General Overview
Riding in the backcountry often means maneuvering through trees. When you have become bored with the regular runs at your resort try exploring a little in the trees. A couple pointers could make it a lot more fun and help make sure you come home alive.
Preparation
If you can't ski powder or have turning 110% wired then this is not the place for you. Also taking your pole straps off from around your wrist can help prevent a dislocated shoulder.
Doing It
Skiing trees is no different then skiing powder or gates or a busy day at your local hill but tree's don't move and they really really hurt when you hit them. Typically you also find a lot of other obstacles just under the snow when you are out in the trees and off the groomers.
Make sure to concentrate on the space between the trees (where you want to be) rather then the trees themselves. Also plan your moves a couple trees in advance.
Ducking in for a few turns then coming back out to a groomer is a good way to get comfortable with riding trees as it provides breaks to breathe and relax between turns.
Mastering The Trick
Common Mistakes
One of the most common mistakes made is getting going too fast to stay in control. Don't let it happen to you.
General Tips
- Give evergreen trees a little extra room, they usually hide a pretty deep hole around them that sucks (and can be fatal) if fallen into.
- Try to always have an escape route planned too when you're skiing trees you are not super familiar with.
- Never ski trees alone or without telling someone where you went. Freak accidents do happen and they are a lot harder to clean up if no one knows where you are.
Adding Style
Backcountry cliff drops will add style to any tree line you find.
