Learning The Trick
General Overview
A continual rotation of the kayak starting flat and becoming vertical with out the use of the paddle.
Preparation
This is a great exercise in edge control. Keep with it as it will help you a ton later on. The trick is explained doing a left Whirly Bird but is easily switched.
Doing It
Begin by having your kayak motionless in flat water. Start out by loading the bow of kayak by scooping water onto the bow. You do this by lowering the left edge of your kayak and leaning forward; now transfer from your left to right edge bringing water across your bow. By doing this you should have noticed a couple of things:
- You created motion- the kayak has rotated left and..
- You ended in perfect position to do the same with the stern. The stern is much easier to do this with than the bow, as there is typically much less volume in the stern, than there is in the bow; you can also leverage your weight better.
As you lift your left edge to shed water from the bow you are in perfect position to engage the right edge of your stern. Throw your stern under you by transferring your weight from fore to aft, dipping the right edge of your kayak underneath the water.
You then shed the water from the stern by changing from your right to left edge by dropping the left edge of the kayak.
Finishing
Now in the same motion throw your weight forward and repeat the first part of the process. This cycle will send the boat in circles and the better you get the more vertical to boat will become until you are doing clean, flat water, cartwheels.
